In this blog we will walk you through how to sign up for Google Analytics. Why is this important? Take a minute to review our blog titled “Google Analytics Review” to better understand why they are important and how you can use them to inform business decisions. This task is all about getting your site ready to capture data. We will teach you how to use this data in a future task.
Let’s get started!
Step 1: Go to http://www.google.ca/analytics/
Sign in on the top right hand side of the page with the Google account you used or created in the previous task to sign up for Google Places for Business. This is likely a gmail account.
Step 2: Sign up.
Once you have logged in, you will see the following page. This is the process we will follow to get Google Analytics active on your site. Click on the Sign Up bottom to get started.
Step 3: Fill out the information to identify the website you want to track.
The first step is to tell Google what website you want to track. Below we fill out the form using Hunch Manifest as an example. The Account name and the Website name can be the same.
Enter your time zone . We recommend you un-check the last box “Account Specialists”, as displayed below.
Step 4: Click, Get my tracking ID.
You will be presented the Google terms of service, select your country and click “I Agree”.
Congrats! You are done the first step. Once you have clicked on I agree, the following page will appear with your tracking ID and code. The tracking ID starts with UA followed by numbers. We have blocked out the number in our example below but yours will appear there.
If you are using WordPress for your site, you will need your tracking ID and a WordPress Plugin to automatically add the code. WordPress users should follow instructions for installing a plugin to activate their Google Analytics here.
If you are using a html page, you will insert the code on each page.
If you have a webmaster, you can send them the code (this is the part that starts and ends with </script> and ask them to put it on all the pages of your site.
If you have already set it up, to find your tracking ID and the code, login to Google Analytics and then click on the ADMIN menu on the top. Then in the middle section, select Tracking Info > Tracking Code.
This will then display your tracking ID and User ID.
