Do you know who your customer is?  Do you know what they look at online and where they get their information? This short activity will help you better understand who you your target market is so that you can use this information to better target them.   This post was inspired by Steve Blank and Noah Kagan.

Identify 5-10 of your top customers. These are people you do business with today and that have brought you the most success.  If you are just starting out, pick 5 people who are your ideal customer.  Start by using the information you already know about them and fill out the following for each one.

  • Age
  • Where do they live
  • What do they do  for a living
  • Their interests – clubs/associations they are a part of, what they studied in College/University
  • Problem you are solving for them
  • What social media platforms do they use?
  • 3 Blogs/websites they read
  • 3 Websites they visit to find information about companies like yours

If you still have some things missing, Google their name. Look at their Facebook profile. Look at their LinkedIn profile.  Who do they follow? What Groups are they a part of?

Once you have this information, step back and look at where you have themes. Is there a specific age range that you do a lot of business with? Are there similarities in interests or clubs they are members of?  We will use this information to figure out where you post your blog.

Now we can use this information to start planning your first blog because now you know where your ideal customers fish.

Did you try it? What did you learn that you didn’t know before about your customers?
